March 3, 1971: One of the most joyous art shows to burst upon the Brooklyn scene will light up The Brooklyn Museum’s Community Gallery when the third annual SALUTE TO BROOKLYN’S CREATIVE YOUTH opens on March 14.
Sponsored by the Brooklyn Arts and Culture Association (BACA), SALUTE reaches out into the community and gathers together the finest paintings, sculpture, graphics and collages created during the past year by Brooklyn’s talented young people. In the future, in keeping with the widening scope of cultural growth, BACA will also focus the spotlight on music, dance, theater and other related crafts.
To coordinate this far-flung showcase of art from Brooklyn’s public, private and parochial schools, BACA works with the Board of Education, local boards and city and borough institutions. In addition to the exhibit at The Brooklyn Museum’s Community Gallery, hundreds of exhibits are displayed throughout the borough in banks, schools, community centers, churches, temples and storefronts.
Charlene Victor, dynamic executive director of BACA, noted regretfully that they would have to forego the usual opening day celebration for SALUTE because of the tremendous weekend crowds coming to see the Vincent van Gogh shows at The Brooklyn Museum. “However,” she said, “in a way it’s fortuitous that our SALUTE and the Van Gogh shows are on at the same time. We hope that the many thousands of art lovers coming to see the Van Goghs will also see the artistic achievements of our youngsters and realize the link between their work and the genius of Van Gogh, in the search for freedom and personal expression.”
SALUTE TO BROOKLYN’S CREATIVE YOUTH will be on view through April 11 and admission is free.Brooklyn Museum Archives. Records of the Department of Public Information. Press releases, 1971 - 1988. 1971, 019. View Original
