  • August 1, 1989 The longest-running periodic survey of American printmaking in the United States will mark its 25th anniversary with the opening of The Brooklyn Museum’s exhibition Projects & Portfolios: The 25th National Print Exhibition on October 6. This important exhibition, which will examine trends and developments in the print field since 1986, includes 82 works by 50 well- and lesser-known artists. It will remain on view in the Museum’s Contemporary Galleries, located on the fifth floor, through December 31, 1989.

To celebrate the 25th edition of the National Print Exhibition series, the Museum has organized a companion presentation entitled Print National Overview (September 29 - December 4) to serve as a historical context for Projects & Portfolios. The exhibition highlights works from each of the 24 previous National Print Exhibitions, first begun in 1947.

Projects & Portfolios examines the trend in American printmaking in the last three years toward serial imagery. It contains examples from three categories of worK: portfolios, also known as suites, shown either in their entirety or by a representative selection, that deal with a narrative theme or variations; projects that consist of two or more examples of related prints that artists and master printers have created in extended workshop collaborations; and the most recent development, multicomponent prints created to be shown in a predetermined configuration as installations.

The exhibition includes entire portfolios created by such artists as Francesco Clemente, Carroll Dunham, Donald Judd, Brice Marden, Robert Morris, and Michelle Stuart. Representative prints from projects include those by artists Deborah Freedman, Jane Hammond, Ellsworth Kelly, and Terence La Noue. Artists represented with installation pieces include John Baldessari, Charles Garabedian[,] and Matt Mullican.

Projects & Portfolios was selected and organized by Barry Walker, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Museum. It was made possible, in part, by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and the New York State Council on the Arts.

The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue co-published by the Museum and Hine Editions with a foreword by Robert T. Buck, Director of The Brooklyn Museum, and an essay by Mr. Walker (softcover, $19.95).
