  • September 19, 1981 “Inward Image”, a collection of 79 photographs by N. Jay Jaffee opens at The Brooklyn Museum on September 19 and runs through November 19th. This collection of Mr. Jaffee’s work includes pieces from the late Forties up to the present.

    The subjects facing Mr. Jaffee’s camera are as varied as his locations. From the streets of Brooklyn and Paris, to the hilltops of Montreal, his photographs are filled with images that fascinate him. He works only in black and white for ultimate control of print quality. The dynamic, sharp, brilliant printing he obtains in the darkroom turns an interesting view into a striking photographic work.

    The show is called, “Inward Image”, a concept that artist Charles Sheeler used when referring to painting - as opposed to “eyes outward” - which he defined as photography. “ ‘Inward Image’ “, Mr. Jaffee says, “is a concept of photographing what is in front of me and transcending it by my own feelings with what’s available photographically”. Mr. Jaffee adds that “ ‘Inward Image’ is really inward expression that reflects attitudes toward what I see and towards life”.

    Mr. Jaffee published a book, “Photographs, 1947-55” and his works are currently in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris and the Library of Congress. The Pompidou Museum in Paris exhibited his work as part of a group show this past summer.
