Balzac in a Monk's Habit (Balzac en robe de moine)
Rodin experimented with two costume possibilities for the Balzac monument: the suit worn by the writer in daily public life and the Dominican robe he wore when he worked at home at night. That robe is seen in the final monument. The writer stands here before a stack of books and manuscripts, the materials of his art.
