Cybele, large model (Cybèle, grand modèle)

The name "Cybele" was not attached to this work until it was exhibited in London in 1914. It was an appropriate title for this massive sculpture. Cybele was the ancient deity, later also identified with other Greco-Roman goddesses, including Rhea, who was the mother of the gods and herself the goddess of both fertility and cultivation. In ancient art she is usually represented in a seated pose; the omission of the head and the left arm here may bring to mind the condition of many of the finest of ancient statues.
