Balzac, Nude Study C, Large Version (Balzac, étude de nu, grand modèle)

Rodin's first idea was to represent Balzac in middle age, when he (like Rodin) was at the height of his creative power. This study of a powerful, broad-bellied, middleaged man was made relatively early in the monument's process of development. The mass of metal between the figure's legs is a casting of the remaining clay left from the molding of the figure, indicating that the figure was never intended to be considered for the final monument.
