View of Vesuvius: Effect 11:25 A.M.

Charles Coleman regularly depicted Mount Vesuvius from the window of his villa on Capri, Italy, where he settled in 1885. His pictures of the dramatic profile of, and variable atmospheric effects around, this landmark evoke images of Mount Fuji that proliferate in Japanese art.
