The Visit

In the late 1910s Weber arrived at his own brand of Synthetic Cubism, typified here by a riot of intersecting planar shapes of varied patterns, colors, and textures. Emerging from this confusion of forms are four figures--two men and two women. Although it is difficult to attach a specific narrative to the painting, it may be that we see a courtship ritual, with the couple on the right under the scrutiny of watchful (and perhaps slightly disapproving) parents on the left.
