Rainy Night, Charing Cross Shops

Joseph Pennell was an active and internationally celebrated figure in the etching revival: he helped to establish the Philadelphia Society of Etchers in 1880, produced more than nine hundred etchings during his career, and authored numerous publications about printmaking. He is also known as one of James McNeill Whistler's most ardent followers; Pennell befriended the elder artist after moving to London in 1884. His debt to Whistler is evident in the Japanese characteristics of his work, such as the high vantage point of this downtown London street scene.
