Tripod Plate

Supported on short legs, the polychrome lead-glazed Tripod Plate exemplifies the color and exuberance associated with Tang burial ceramics. The vessel also represents the Tang fashion for imitating contemporary non-Chinese forms and decoration, particularly Central Asian gold and silver vessels. The stamped decoration under a three-color glaze on the Plate's interior has been compared to copybook designs for painting the ceilings of Tang Buddhist temples as welf as the designs on other eighth-century funerary objects.
