Wine Jar with Fish and Aquatic Plants

The extraordinary deep blue color of the cobalt oxide underglaze decoration, the strong contours of the Jar, and the sophisticated design that fills the entire surface in one unified field all make the Wine Jar one of the masterpieces of Chinese porcelain. Four naturalistic depictions of fish form the focal points of the design, and these alternate with stylized lotus and other water plants. The names of the four fish form a rebus for a phrase meaning "honest and incorruptible," adding an extra layer of meaning to the decoration. While the design might exhort the Jar's owner to the upright action, the wine it contained remained a powerful reminder of life's temptations.
