This early image of Maitreya from Thailand is identified by a water flask carried in one hand and a small stupa on the front of his piled hair. Stupas are dome-shape, spired burial mounds used throughout the Buddhist world to signify the passage out of earthly existence. The water bottle suggests Maitreya’s future life as a wandering monk.
