Seated Buddha

Asian Art

On View: Asian Galleries, Southwest, 2nd floor
This image shows the Buddha in meditation, with both hands on his lap. In a feature typical of Buddha sculptures made in India and Southeast Asia, the draped robe clings to his chest, making it look almost bare. This sculpture is made of sandstone. Because it is formed in layers, sandstone will sometimes flake off in a process called delamination or spalling.
