Camping Out in the Adirondack Mountains

American Art

In the last Adirondack image that Homer prepared for the illustrated press, he once again presented local woodsmen in a familiar and favorite setting. Two men sit before a bark leanto on the shore of Mink Pond before a smudge fire burning to keep away insects. The nearby canoe, assorted fishing paraphernalia, and a string of fish announce the end of a successful day on the pond. An enthusiastic fisherman, Homer may well have participated in this excursion as both angler and artist.
