Decorative Arts and Design
Although Francois Jourdain was known primarily as a painter, he was also an accomplished designer and a founding member of the Union des Artistes Modernes, an important group of avant-garde designers. This adjustable chair is rendered in the Art Moderne style, which is characterized by simple, bold curves. The use of exotic mahogany and cane alludes to the French colonial empire, still partially intact during this period. The chair was manufactured by Jourdain’s own firm, Les Ateliers Modernes.

CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION
Adjustable arm chair comprised of rectilinear members. Square seat back attached by hinge to square seat notched on bottom, attached at midpoint of seat back and towards front of seat. Continuous arm rest, front leg, runner, and back leg that curves upward from back runner to front of arm rest. Squared seat back and seat of woven cane forming checkerboard pattern.
