Catalogue Description: Circular medal. Obverse: Seated allegorical female figure of America holding liberty cap and pole and offering laurel wreath with eagle atop national shield, surrounded by wheat sheaves, spinning wheel, plow, cornucopia and other instruments, sailing ship on horizon; legend in relief: "AMERICAN INSTITUTE / NEW YORK." Reverse: Laurel wreath framing legend in relief, "THE MEDAL OF EXCELLENCE / AWARDED TO" and engraved inscription, "Theo. C. Bates, / For Corset / Lock Clasps. / 1884."
