Silverplate pitcher (a) and stand (b) with under plate or drip pan (c); part of set with goblets (1994.119.3-.4). (a) Pitcher: Large, broad, cylindrical form that slopes slightly inward toward top. Body features asymmetrical decoration in the Japanese taste, though form is in Neo-Greque style. Hinged circular lid with slightly upward sloping outer rim, surmounted by centered flattened dome, surmounted by pierced ring-like finial, surmounted by small sphere. Body features pronounced square profile rim with molded, evenly segmented alternating floral motifs. Incised, bilaterally symmetrical large floral spray motif on either side of spout. At midpoint of body, applied opposing rod-like members extrude from sides; these members rest in sockets on stand and permit pitcher to be tilted forward. Molded ornamental square profile band repeated at base. Large, hollow applied handle, with asymmetrical foliate and floral decoration, anthemion base. Opposed applied spout, with symmetrical, compartmentalized floral and anthemion decoration overall. Spout is partially covered. Casting overall is not particularly crisp. (b) Stand: Large, arched structure composed of two thin arched rods joined at top. Rods are connected at each side by molded, pierced, diamond-shaped forms with floral decoration with symmetrical scrolling foliate supports. Plaques at midpoint of paired rods hold sockets for rotating pitcher, and are surmounted by two spheres. Raised base, molded, segmented horizontal band with alternating floral motifs. Attached symmetrically to front side of base are two stands with upward-pointing centered single prongs to secure goblets. Molded, segmented horizontal band with alternating floral motifs around base. (c) Under plate or drip pan: large central removable circular drip pan with applied curved ring-like handle with asymmetrical stylized Japanese decoration.
