Good question. The Spanish Colonial collection, which illustrates the convergence of indigenous, European and American artistic traditions from the 17th to 19th centuries, is divided into four different curatorial collections: Arts of the Americas, American Paintings and Sculpture, European Paintings and Sculpture and Decorative Arts. This division has been influenced by media, which is why the portrait of Huascar, Thirteenth Inca (1995.29.13) is in American Paintings and Sculpture and why South American silver mate cups and straws (48.206.65 and 41.1274.14a,b) are in Decorative Arts. However, the division also lacks consistency. For example, there are also Spanish Colonial paintings in the Arts of the Americas and European Paintings and Sculpture collections. Eventually, this inconsistency will be resolved and corrected.
