Figures in Street

Béla Kádár

European Art

Béla Kádár’s composition depicts abstracted, biomorphic bodies within a planar architectural space. It reflects a range of early international twentieth-century modernist styles and, perhaps, the set-design work he did for avant-garde theater performances in Budapest.

His work was included in the famed 1926 Société Anonyme exhibition organized by Katherine Dreier at the Brooklyn Museum, and then in another group show at the Museum in 1928, the year this watercolor entered the collection.
