A New York sculptor who began to gain recognition for his work in the 1930s, Chaim Gross produced innumerable figure studies in ink and wash on which he based his figurative wood carvings. In this more developed scene done independently of his sculptural work, one still sees the artist’s primary attention to the sculptural outline of forms; color, in the form of watery washes, is added as more of a secondary element.
