Middle Kingdom artists often combined traditional Egyptian forms with innovative stylistic and iconographic features. This figure’s pose—seated cross-legged on the ground with his hands on his lap—first appeared hundreds of years earlier in Dynasty 5 of the Old Kingdom. The wide wig and pudgy face, however, are hallmarks of early Dynasty 12.
