For Boudin, the sky—with its constant cloud motion and ever-changing light—proved a powerful source of inspiration throughout his career. Here, as in so many of his works, Boudin devotes two-thirds of the composition to the sky. While the thick clouds—painted in hues of white, gray, and even yellow—move across the bright blue sky, the water remains relatively still, providing faintly shimmering reflections of the masts and crane of the port.
