Like many academic and avant-garde artists, the Hungarian painter Rippl-Rónai traveled to Brittany in the late 1880s, drawn by the abiding traditions of the French province. Several years after his return to Hungary, Rippl-Rónai painted this scene of a woman and three girls in Breton costume, perhaps also evocative of traditional Hungarian dress. In his rendering of the lush foliage, the artist demonstrates his embrace of flatness and dense patterning, hallmarks of the group of painters called the Nabis. With this formal technique, Rippl-Rónai endows his picture with an intimacy appropriate to a moment shared by a mother and her daughters.
