In this sweeping view of a village nestled at the base of a foothill, Rousseau divides his composition into horizontal bands of hazy, atmospheric sky and fertile valley. Demonstrating his technical virtuosity, the painter contrasts a delicate touch for trees and rooftops in the middle distance with broad, gestural strokes of green, cream, and brown, which he uses to summarily define the rounded contours and varied foliage of the slope in the foreground.
