Court Presentation Ensemble, 1896. Unknown maker, France. Silk, metallic, cotton. Brooklyn Museum, Anonymous gift in memory of Mrs. John Roebling, 70.53.5a-e. Worn by Mrs. Washington A. (Emily) Roebling in a portrait by Carolus-Duran. [See Charles-Émile-Auguste Carolus-Duran (French, 1838–1917). Emily Warren Roebling, 1896.] Mrs. Roebling wore the gown when presented to Queen Victoria at the court of St. James during her Grand Tour in spring 1896. She was also presented to the Empress of Russia (May 14, 1896). According to family tradition this is a Worth gown.
