Curatorial Remarks: In the summer of 1856, while traveling in the White Mountains with Asher B. Durand and other artists, Gay painted this small study (below, 58.156), which became the basis for the painting (above, 52.15) made in his Boston studio two years later. The broad brushstrokes and high-keyed colors of the study became more subtle in the finished composition. Gay also moved the vantage point slightly and added anecdotal details, such as dirt roads, farm animals, and buildings.
