Front Screen A: Focus on Impressionism
The term Impressionism is generally applied to innovations associated with certain late nineteenth-century French artists, especially Claude Monet, who worked in a spontaneous, naturalistic style characterized by visible brushwork and a brightly colored palette. Their subjects, mostly urban scenes and landscapes, were sometimes painted outdoors (a technique called plein-air painting). For them, the depiction of outdoor light itself took precedence over the portrayal of subject matter and commitment to spatial illusion. Impressionist chromatic innovations were informed by scientific color theory, whereas the informality of their compositions was associated with both the new technology of photography and the popularity in Europe of Japanese prints.
By the 1890s a group of American painters had adopted French Impressionist techniques in varying degrees, evolving their styles independently. Mary Cassatt was the first American formally associated with the Impressionist movement. Some American artists, including Theodore Robinson, John Singer Sargent, Theodore Wendel, and Frederick C. Frieseke, enjoyed direct contact with Monet. Childe Hassam, Willard L. Metcalf, and Henry O. Tanner discovered Impressionism while pursuing art studies in Paris. Hassam, in particular, was a pioneer in adapting Impressionist strategies to evocative images of New York City.
In general American artists did not carry the technique as far as Monet and his associates did, maintaining a firmer grasp on modeled form and conventional appearances. Painters such as John H. Twachtman occasionally employed Impressionist devices to achieve effects that verged on poetic abstraction. An international Impressionist manner persisted well into the twentieth century and is demonstrated in the paintings of Ernest Lawson, Edward Potthast, and William Glackens.
