Revivalism
In art and design, revivalism is the invocation of past styles. The art of ancient Greece and Rome, and to some extent that of Egypt, is the foundation of Western art. At various times in history, interest in ancient art refocused Western art. The Renaissance, at its height in the fifteenth century, is the most famous of these revivals of classical art. In the late eighteenth to the early nineteenth century, there was another moment of intense interest in the classical past and Egypt that we call Neoclassicism. Other revivals invoked less-distant styles. The Rococo Revival of the mid-nineteenth century was inspired by the Louis XIV and Louis XV styles, whose curvilinear designs and keen interest in the realistic depiction of nature had flourished less than a century earlier in France. As the United States became more secure economically and politically at the end of the nineteenth century, its citizens began to look to their own colonial past, launching the Colonial Revival style.
