Representations of American Artists

Images of artists and art-making abound in nineteenth- and twentieth-century painting and sculpture. Artists portrayed themselves in self-portraits or were captured in images made by colleagues. Some are formal portraits and many depict the artist at work. Other depictions, such as Malvina Hoffman’s bronze of her teacher Ivan Mestrovic (26.519), heroize the master artist. In pieces where the artist does not actually appear, as in the studio subjects of William Merritt Chase (13.50), William Glackens (56.70), and Philip Pearlstein (79.17), their presence is nevertheless palpable because we seem to be in their workspace and we see what they saw as they painted. Finally, some artists evoke their presence abstractly, as Louise Bourgeois does in portraying the hands that make her sculptures (1999.124).
