Life, Death, and Transformation in the Americas

Music Showcase

5–10 p.m.

Chilean singer-songwriter Claudia Acuña performs as part of the Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert Series at 5 p.m., followed by Chicha Libre’s Peruvian-inspired psychedelic pop at 7:30 and political hip-hop duo Rebel Diaz at 9 p.m.

Performance

5:30 p.m.

Afro-Peruvian percussionist Marcos Napa and his band give a dynamic performance incorporating the dance, vocals, and instruments of Peru.

Storytelling

6 p.m.

A storyteller from the Redhawk Native American Arts Council tells stories inspired by the Arts of the Americas collection. At 6, 7, and 8 p.m.

Curator Talk

6 p.m.

Nancy Rosoff, Andrew W. Mellon Curator of the Arts of the Americas, and Susan Kennedy Zeller, Associate Curator of Native American Art, discuss the inspiration for the installation Life, Death, and Transformation in the Americas.

Pop-up Gallery Talks

6–9 p.m.

Short, lively talks shed light on intriguing works in the Arts of the Americas collection.

Hands-on Art

6:30–8:30 p.m.

Sculpt a powerful clay figure inspired by objects in Life, Death, and Transformation.

Music

7 p.m.

New York’s only all-female mariachi band, Mariachi Flor de Toloache, performs a modern take on traditional mariachi, blending sounds from the United States, Puerto Rico, Germany, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Egypt, Mexico, and Argentina. At 7 and 8:30 p.m.

Participatory Program

7:30 p.m.

Take part in an authentic despacho ceremony invoking ayni, or reciprocity, for loving-kindness and the maintenance of life. Performed by traditional Q’ero healers Don Francisco and Doña Juana from the high Andes of Peru.

At the Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturdays, thousands of visitors enjoy free programs of art and entertainment each month, from 5 to 11 p.m. All evening long, the Museum Café serves a wide selection of sandwiches, salads, and beverages, and a cash bar offers wine and beer. Parking is a flat rate of $5 starting at 5 p.m. All other Saturdays, the Museum closes at 6 p.m.

Please note that due to limited capacities, some Target First Saturday programs require tickets. Ticket lines often form 30 minutes before ticket distribution at the Visitor Center located in the Rubin Lobby. Members may pick up tickets from the Membership Desk while supplies last. Programs subject to change without notice.
