Target First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum

Light Up the Season

Music

5–8 p.m.

Three Dutch musical acts—Michael Varekamp’s Caribbean jazz ensemble, the rock band EveNi, and Lee-Ursus Alexander—create a gezellig, or cozy, atmosphere. This program is made possible with support from the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York as part of its NY400 Celebration.

Film and Music

5:30 p.m.

La Vie du Christ (The Life of Christ) (Alice Guy Blaché, 1906, 34 min., NR). This silent film by the first female director draws on James Tissot’s paintings of the life of Jesus Christ as inspiration for its backgrounds. Judith Dolkart, former Associate Curator of European Art and curator of the exhibition James Tissot: “The Life of Christ,” and Joan Simon, Curator at Large at the Whitney Museum, introduce the film and answer questions following the screening. Presented in conjunction with the Whitney Museum. Live piano accompaniment provided by Ben Model. Free tickets are available at the Visitor Center at 5 p.m.

Hands-On Art

6:30–8:30 p.m.

Create a stained-glass decoration to catch the winter light. Free timed tickets are available at the Visitor Center at 5:30 p.m.

Film

7 p.m.

A Hard Day’s Night (Richard Lester, 1964, 87 min, NR). This critically acclaimed comedy and mock documentary stars the Fab Four at the height of Beatlemania. Free tickets are available at the Visitor Center at 6 p.m.

Curator Talk

7 p.m.

Kevin Dumouchelle, Interim Assistant Curator of the Arts of Africa and the Pacific Islands, discusses the Museum’s collection of African art. This event is Sign Language interpreted. Free tickets are available at the Visitor Center at 6 p.m.

Music

7:30–8:30 p.m.

The award-winning Brooklyn Youth Chorus presents seasonal songs and liturgical music inspired by James Tissot’s The Life of Christ.

Book Signing

8 p.m.

William C. Siegmann, Curator Emeritus of African Art, signs copies of African Art: A Century at the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum’s new catalogue of its African collection.

Young Voices Gallery Talk

8 p.m.

Student Guides Zinia Rahman and Hilary Thompson give a talk on the exhibition James Tissot: “The Life of Christ.”

Target First Saturdays Book Club

9 p.m.

Renowned New York City disc jockey and author Pete Fornatale discusses his new book, Back to the Garden: The Story of Woodstock. The book is available for purchase from the Museum Shop.

First Saturdays Focus Group

9–9:30 p.m.

Join us for a discussion of what would bring you back to the Museum.

Dance Party

9–11 p.m.

Relive warm summer memories and shake it at a hot dance party presented by Brooklyn’s Soul Summit.

At the Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturdays, thousands of visitors enjoy free programs of art and entertainment each month from 5 to 11 p.m. All evening long, the Museum Café serves a wide selection of sandwiches, salads, and beverages, and a cash bar offers wine and beer. Parking is a flat rate of $4 starting at 5 p.m. All other Saturdays, the Museum closes at 6 p.m.

Please note that due to limited capacities, some Target First Saturday programs require tickets. Ticket lines often form 30 minutes before ticket distribution at the Visitor Center located in the Rubin Lobby. Members may pick up tickets from the Membership Desk beginning at 2 p.m. while supplies last. Programs subject to change without notice.
