Assistant Curator, Contemporary Art—Curatorial

The Assistant Curator, Contemporary Art participates in a fast-paced and dynamic area of growth within the Museum. This energetic individual assists with the development and implementation of exhibitions, growing and rethinking our collection as well as cultivating patrons and artists. The individual in this position is also welcome to propose ideas for exhibitions of contemporary art. Candidates should be committed to making a range of contemporary artistic practices accessible and engaging for our diverse audience, and be familiar with a range of international and local contemporary art practices with the goal of presenting them in the context of a global collection that covers over 5,000 years of history.


  • Advanced degree in art history or a related field
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a curatorial department
  • Ability to write clearly for a general audience
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask
  • Creativity, openness, and flexibility
  • Advanced word processing skills and familiarity with databases
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a temperament needed to interact with artists, as well as a team of educators, conservators, designers, and other museum professionals

Additional qualifications:

  • Foreign language skills a plus


  • Conceptualize and propose collection activations, and collaborate with curatorial colleagues on exhibition projects
  • Assist in the upkeep of and alterations to collection installations
  • Oversee new collection and exhibition projects as assigned
  • Work with Development staff to cultivate new collectors, dealers, and possible funders
  • Lead donor group activities, such as studio and collection visits
  • Collaborate with Museum educators to prepare didactic materials, special seminars, and classes
  • Recommend public programs centered around exhibition projects
  • Attend events and meetings of the Collection Committee and Contemporary Art Committee
  • Propose new acquisitions for the collection
  • Assist with research for and writing of acquisition proposals for quarterly Collection Committee meetings
  • Field inquiries from the general public and scholars
  • Support all departmental activities under the direction of the Senior Curator, Contemporary Art

Schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, with occasional evening hours required
