Editor—Publications and Interpretation

We seek an Editor with prior experience working in the specialized area of museum exhibitions to provide in-house editorial services for exhibition-related publications and didactic materials.

Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or a related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Three to five years of experience as the primary project editor in a cultural or nonprofit institution, with museum or visual arts experience preferred
  • Excellent skills in traditional editing, copyediting, and proofreading, with a keen eye for detail
  • Knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition)
  • Familiarity with proofreading and copyediting marks
  • Experience editing a range of texts, including catalogue essays, exhibition didactics, brochures, pamphlets, and related content
  • Proven ability to work diplomatically and tactfully with a wide range of authors and writers
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, pursue several projects simultaneously, and meet agreed-upon deadlines
  • Excellent skills in oral and written communication, with proven effectiveness in managing complex collaborations with graphic designers, photo researchers, curators, and others 
  • Experience and comfort with Microsoft Word (especially editing tools), Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to quickly change course, when needed, for time-sensitive projects or as procedures change
  • A commitment to equality as an institutional goal

Additional qualifications: 

  • Visual arts, art history, or museum background, and familiarity with the language of art history and contemporary criticism
  • Familiarity with Google suite, InDesign/InCopy, or other publishing programs
  • Knowledge of book production and distribution helpful

Responsibilities: 

  • Act as the primary editor for a range of museum publications including exhibition copy (didactic texts, labels, and gallery guides), catalogues, and collection books
  • Assess authors' submissions and provide feedback and guidance on necessary revisions and organizational changes
  • Correct texts for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and standard art historical usage
  • Write author queries 
  • Fact-check submissions
  • Review editorial changes with authors, resolve questions, and ensure all final changes are made and applied to related texts produced for the exhibition or project
  • Review projects in all stages of design and production, and ensure accurate implementation of recommended changes made prior to final approval
  • Ensure texts follow the Brooklyn Museum house style 
  • Ensure consistency of printed and published materials both within an exhibition and museum-wide
  • Proof interim and final versions of projects, collate corrections from all parties, and monitor schedules
  • Participate in design and production meetings 
  • Ensure schedules are met and alert department head and other parties of any scheduling concerns and help facilitate revisions, if necessary
  • Track requests and projects, making sure proofs/previews are circulated, reviewed, and approved by all necessary departments
  • Act as a second reader for primary editors on other projects
  • Traffic book materials as necessary
  • Support other Museum editorial tasks as requested

Schedule: 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm
