MAINTENANCE/SURVIVAL/AND ITS RELATION TO FREEDOM: YOU AND THE CITY: A performance by Mierle Laderman Ukeles

Sunday, January 13, 2013

1–5:45 pm

Martha A. and Robert S. Rubin Pavilion, 1st Floor

Conceptual and environmental artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles, featured in the exhibition Materializing “Six Years”: Lucy R. Lippard and the Emergence of Conceptual Art, invites visitors to the Museum’s entrance pavilion to join her in public, one-on-one conversations. Among the topics to be addressed are Hurricane Sandy and issues of personal freedom; each participant will be given up to fifteen minutes to speak.

This free performance expands on Ukeles’s earlier work, including her performances INTERVIEWING PASSERSBY ON THE SIDEWALK ABOUT THEIR MAINTENANCE LIVES (1974) and MAINTAINING NYC IN CRISIS: WHAT KEEPS NYC ALIVE? (1976), as well as the questionnaires she provided to viewers of her exhibitions in the early to mid-1970s, some of which appear in Materializing “Six Years.” This program is presented by the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art.
