Off the Wall: “Fantastic Journey”

The first in our new Thursday-evening series, this month’s Off the Wall explores Afrofuturism. Cash bar throughout the evening; beats provided by DJ Mursi Layne.



6:30 p.m. Curator Tour

Curator Saisha Grayson leads a tour of Wangechi Mutu: A Fantastic Journey.



7 p.m. Talk: "Fantastic Visions"

Using audio and video clips, novelist N. K. Jemisin, poet and professor Mendi D. Lewis, artist and writer Kiini Ibura Salaam, and writer and storyteller Ibi Zoboi discuss science fiction writer Octavia Butler’s influential work.



7:30 p.m. Performance: Daví‘s The Beginning of Everything eating

In this live music, video, dance, and theater piece, Daví takes us on an Afrofuturistic journey, bumping into the likes of Sun Ra, Parliament-Funkadelic, and Grace Jones along the way. 8 p.m. Performance: Saya Woolfalk’s ChimaTEK

In this interactive performance, the Empathics (fictional hybrid human-plant creatures), demonstrate the workings of their synthesizing machine.
