Advocacy Leadership Training Seminar

Thursday, February 27, 2020

6:30–9:30 pm

Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor

In celebration of Black History Month, HYP NYC (Habitat Young Professionals New York City) and the Brooklyn Museum welcome AFROPUNK and community leaders to facilitate a conversation about the history of affordable housing, how it has influenced the current landscape of the city, and the bills/policies Habitat for Humanity NYC is working on to develop and preserve affordable housing. Panelists will then host breakout training workshops on how to advocate and mobilize.

Each workshop will result in a tangible action plan to mobilize volunteers. Workshops focus on the 2020 Census, including canvassing training, scripting, etc. Event participants will also organize a special kickoff gathering for the date/time volunteers plan to go out and canvas. The kickoff location, which is to be announced, will be based on targeted neighborhoods and is an opportunity to include high profile industry/community leaders as kickoff hosts.

Workshop topics (in formation—please check back!):

  • Mobilizing Your Networks: Mila Jam, recording artist and activist
  • Census 2020: Kathleen Daniel, Field Director, NYC Census 2020
  • Contacting Your Representatives: Katrell Lewis, Senior Manager of Advocacy and Community Engagement, Habitat for Humanity New York City
  • Rev. Dr. Charles Butler, Vice President of Equitable Development, Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement (topic to be announced)

Free, but RSVP required.
