Book Release: She Begat This

Celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Lauryn Hill’s groundbreaking debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998), with the release of award-winning author Joan Morgan’s new book She Begat This: 20 Years of the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which examines the artist’s musical and cultural legacy. Come early, at 6 pm, for a book-signing with Morgan and a listening session including the album and videos it inspired.

Morgan is joined by fellow hip-hop journalism pioneers for a conversation on the iconic album, including image activist Michaela angela Davis, feminist writer and editor Kierna Mayo, consultant and Native Son founder Emil Wilbekin, and scholar and transmedia film producer Dr. Yaba Blay.

  • 6–7 pm Book-signing with Morgan and Lauryn Hill–inspired playlist curated by Syreeta Gates
  • 7 pm L-O-V-E: a documentary short (Sallomé Hralima and Herman-Jean Noel, 2018, 8 min.)
  • 7:15–8:15 pm Live mixtape discussion with Morgan and contributors to the book
  • 8:15–9:30 pm Artist and DJ Alex Asher Daniel spins a set inspired by the album (glass Rubin Pavilion, 1st floor)
