Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra: Wagner, Barber, Schumann
Sunday, February 26, 2023
2–4 pm
Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor
The Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra presents a dynamic program of three works celebrating aspects of Romanticism. Richard Wagner’s Prelude to Act I of “Lohengrin” describes the Holy Grail’s descent to Earth with a shimmering string opening and slow but intense build to a grand climax. Samuel Barber’s Souvenirs, a nostalgic ode, reflects on the forgotten spirit and magnificence of pre-WWI hotels with music for six dances fashionable in 1914 New York City. Finally, Robert Schumann’s dark and dramatic Fourth Symphony maintains a powerful momentum, with twists and turns ranging from brooding melancholy to heroic passion.
