Sacred Self: Interpretive Self-Portraits on Paper

Saturday, June 23, 2018

11 am–6 pm

Education Gallery, 1st Floor

Visit the exhibition Sacred Self and encounter artworks that explore ideas of the self and that look deeply into how artists relate to their world. For these artists living with developmental disabilities or mental illness, recognizing the sacred in the everyday, including connections to family and community, is a theme reflected throughout their work. During monthly visits to our galleries, the artists were inspired by exhibitions such as Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient Egypt and Ahmed Mater: Mecca Journeys, and by the drawings of Robert Longo, to make their own works on paper in charcoal.

This exhibition, which runs June 20 to July 22, was created through a dynamic partnership between the Brooklyn Museum and ICL, a New York–based not-for-profit agency that offers services to more than 10,000 adults, children, and families annually.
