Virtual Teacher Workshop: MLK Day of Action

Monday, January 17, 2022

10:30 am–12 pm and 1–2:30 pm

Online

Join us for our annual day of action with a series of virtual professional development workshops for educators in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Attend one session or stay for the whole day to explore the intersections of social-emotional learning, racial justice, and arts education.

In the morning workshop, educators Imani Parkinson and Zena Zendajas examine the role of art in personal and collective healing. View artworks in The Slipstream: Reflection, Resilience, and Resistance in the Art of Our Time and study how contemporary artists in the exhibition connect emotion, identity, and action. Then, learn strategies to leverage creative writing and art-making as a tool for healing and reimagine how the classroom can become a restorative space for you and your students.

In the afternoon, we’ll explore our special exhibition Baseera Khan: I Am an Archive to consider how lived experience, global history, and possible futures interconnect. Museum educator ray ferreira leads a session of guided discussion and close looking using artworks from the exhibition. Then, Baseera Khan facilitates an art-making activity to demonstrate how the artist draws on the personal to engage in political critique and radical imagining.

Schedule:

  • 10:30 am–12 pm: “Art and Healing” with Imani Parkinson and Zena Zendajas
  • 1–2:30 pm: “Personal Archive” with Baseera Khan and ray ferreira

Registration is $10 for one session, or $15 for the full day. Upon registration, you will receive a secure Zoom link by email. Members receive 10% off. Not a Member? Join today! Additional financial assistance is available; email us at teacher.services@brooklynmuseum.org to learn more.
