Tour: Uncoded: Sexuality and Desire Across History

Thursday, June 20, 2019

7:30 pm

Meet in the Rubin Lobby, 1st Floor

Concepts of gender and sexuality have varied widely from culture to culture across time. What better place to explore this topic than at an art museum, where we can view representations of the ideals and desires of so many different cultures? On this tour guided by Andrew Lear, Ph.D., founder of Shady Ladies Tours and Oscar Wilde Tours, we’ll trace histories of gender identity throughout our galleries, from views held by ancient Egyptians to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the post–World War II era. Along the way, we’ll find surprising portrayals of strong women, coded images of same-sex desire, and works related to the struggle of LGBTQ+ people for equality—in society and in art!

Tickets are $20 and include Museum admission. Member tickets are $16. Not a Member? Join today.
