Virtual Brooklyn Talks: Stephen Burrows and Pat Cleveland
Thursday, September 17, 2020
Fashion designer Stephen Burrows, whose work is featured in Studio 54: Night Magic, joins model and author Pat Cleveland for a live online conversation about 1970s New York City and their groundbreaking contributions to fashion. Matthew Yokobosky, Senior Curator of Fashion and Material Culture, moderates the discussion and leads a behind-the-scenes tour before the talk, showing off select works in the exhibition.
Stephen Burrows is known for his use of color, chain mail fabric, slinky silhouettes, and signature lettuce-edge hem. His danceable designs were worn by many of the style icons of the 1970s, including on the Studio 54 dancefloor. Pat Cleveland was born in East Harlem and became one of the first Black supermodels, working with designers such as Halston, Giorgio Sant’Angelo, and Antonio Lopez. Her collaborations with Burrows marked a historic moment of increased representation for Black models in runway fashion.
