Virtual Brooklyn Talks: Art and Democracy after the Election

Tuesday, November 17, 2020

6–7 pm

Online

On the heels of the presidential election, artist collective For Freedoms hosts a conversation about the potential for creativity to create social change. Join the artists in considering how art can strengthen democracy and imagine new possibilities for liberation and joy.

Hear from Providence-based artists Jess Brown and Mary Beth Meehan, who are organizing around truth telling, reconciliation, and reparations for the BIPOC community in Rhode Island. In particular, they’re gathering stakeholders, including local leaders and community activists, to reveal distorted histories, identify public policies that concretely harm people of color, and advance initiatives that dismantle systems of racial, social, and economic oppression. Then, Los Angeles–based artist Cassils talks about In Plain Sight, a skywriting project developed in collaboration with artist Rafa Esparza that aims to fight migrant detention by sharing messages over detention centers, immigration courts, and borders.
