I See You Face to Face is a series of in-gallery writing workshops inspired by our current exhibitions and open to all experience levels. Honoring poetry’s place in the Brooklyn Museum’s history, the title comes from “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” by Walt Whitman—who worked at the Brooklyn Apprentices’ Library, the Museum’s predecessor. It speaks to the power of sharing space with artwork and fellow poets.
Can an open door be a portal to a poem? Cross the threshold with poet and filmmaker Courtney Bush in this workshop inspired by Christian Marclay: Doors. Just as Doors, Marclay’s latest cinematic exploration of the meaning behind everyday objects, invites viewers into countless portals between on-screen universes, Bush’s workshop prompts participants to find new perspectives through poetry. Kimberli Gant, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, will introduce the film before you put pencil to paper in this generative writing experience.
Bush is the author of the book-length poem A Movie (Lavender Ink, 2025) and the poetry collections I Love Information (Milkweed, 2023) and Every Book Is About the Same Thing (Newest York, 2022). Bush is also on the writing and directing team of Doormat Productions, along with Jake Goicoechea and Will Carington.
Tickets are $35 and include general admission. Member tickets are $21. Not a Member? Join today! Check out other poetry workshops in this series.
