Bertha von Suttner

Austrian novelist and committed pacifist Bertha von Suttner wrote her most influential novel, Die Waffen nieder! (Lay Down Your Arms), in 1899. She founded the Austrian Peace Society in 1891, and edited the international pacifist journal Die Waffen nieder! from 1892 to 1899. It is widely believed that von Suttner’s dedication to the peace movement influenced her friend and correspondent Alfred Nobel to establish the Nobel Prize for Peace, which von Suttner was awarded in 1905.
