Berthe Morisot
b. 1841, Bourges, France; d. 1895, Paris
Berthe Morisot was a central figure of the French Impressionist movement. After showing her works at the Paris Salon to favorable reviews, she joined the Impressionists and participated in every exhibition from 1874 to 1886. Her friendship with Édouard Manet, beginning in 1868, had a tremendous influence on her work; she married his brother in 1874. Like Mary Cassatt, the other female member of the Impressionist circle, Morisot focused on domestic interiors and subjects.
