Cornelia Scipio married the famous Roman military and political leader Pompey the Great in 52 B.C.E. He was known to have been captivated by her great beauty as well as her extraordinary knowledge of mathematics, philosophy, literature, and music. She traveled widely with him, eventually to Egypt, where, in 48 B.C.E., she witnessed his murder, the result of a bitter civil war in which Pompey had led the opposition to Julius Caesar.
