Elizabeth

b. 1207, Hungary; d. 1231, Marburg, Germany

Elizabeth, daughter of Andrew II, king of Hungary, married Ludwig IV of Thuringia at the age of thirteen. During a famine in 1226, she built a hospice just outside the castle and frequently distributed her wealth to the poor. Widowed in 1227 at the age of twenty, she spent the last four years of her life tending the sick and poor in a Franciscan hospice she built at Marburg, Germany. She died from either physical exhaustion or disease and was canonized in 1235 by Pope Gregory IX.
