Herrad of Lansberg
b. circa 1130, Alsace; d. 1195, Alsace
Herrad was the abbess of the convent of Hohenberg in Alsace, and known for the creation of an illustrated encyclopaedia entitled Hortus deliciarum, or Garden of Delights. Meant as an educational tool for the nuns of her convent, the volume was dedicated to the battle between virtue and vice. Sadly, it was destroyed by a fire in Strasbourg in 1870, although preserved in a copy. Little else is known about Herrad’s life.
