Margaret (Hildegarde of Bingen group)

b. 1242, Hungary; d. 1271, Hungary

Margaret, the daughter of King Bela IV of Hungary, was placed in a convent at age three. Seven years later, she was transferred to the nunnery of the Blessed Virgin, founded by her parents on Hasen Island in the Danube, near Budapest. The island was later renamed in her honor. Margaret took vows at age eighteen and thereafter lived a life of extreme austerity and penance that included ceaseless body mortification. She was canonized in 1943.
