Maria de Ventadorn

Date of birth unknown; d. circa 1222, probably France

Maria de Ventadorn (also called Marie de Turenne) was one of the female troubadours—poet-musicians—of the twelfth century, sometimes called trobairitz, who flourished in southern France. Also a patron of troubadours, she appears as a character in many poems of the time. Her one known piece is structured as a debate with alternating verses written by Marie and another poet, Gui d’Ussel. The poem addresses the relative status of a man and woman in a love relationship.
